Two sets of 'planets' are provided. Both are to scale in terms of diameter
with a wooden base board for set 1. Orbital radii are in proportion which
emphasises the differences between the inner and outer planets. For set 1 the
Sun would be 1m diameter while the second, smaller set has a 20cm dia. Sun
with other planets to scale. Students would take the planets out to the field
to examine the orbital radii on the same scale as the diameters. Mercury is 9m
from the Sun, Venus is 17m, the Earth 23m etc. This type of activity really
brings home the scale of the Solar System and the Universe.
